Joe Rayner, who passed away in early 1998, had been a member of the Spartan Cricket Club from 1948 to 1968. He had held numerous positions within the club heirarchy, as well as being an outstanding player and was awarded a Life Membership for his efforts. He transferred to the Medina Club as captain-coach in 1968. Medina later became the Kwinana Cricket Club. His efforts with that club saw them also award him a Life Membership.

To honour his memory Leeming-Spartans and Kwinana decided to hold an annual pre-season match to compete for the Joe Rayner Memorial Shield. The first of these was held at Orelia - Kwinana's home ground.
